Nevada's Nov. 3 ballot carries the full constitutional row of state government, and for a state of Reno's position — the second city, watching Las Vegas's gravity from the Sierra's foot — the statewide offices matter in particular ways.

At the top, the governor's race leads a slate that includes lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer and controller. These are the officers who run Nevada's distinctive machinery: the secretary of state administers the elections whose mail-ballot system defines Nevada voting; the attorney general leads the state's legal fights, from consumer protection to the interstate water and federal-lands litigation that is a permanent feature of Nevada government; the treasurer manages a portfolio swollen by the state's mining and gaming revenues.

The Legislature, all of the Assembly and half the Senate standing this year, will convene in Carson City in 2027 to write the biennial budget and argue the state's standing agenda: housing costs in both metro areas, education funding, the Colorado River and the state's groundwater basins, and the tax structure of an economy split among gaming, mining, logistics and government itself. Northern Nevada's delegation — Reno, Sparks and the rural counties — legislates as a bloc more often than the state's north-south rivalry suggests.

Judicial races, including seats on the Nevada Supreme Court and the district benches, complete the ballot. Nevada's judges are elected in nonpartisan contests, and the state's bar and judicial performance resources offer voters more than the yard signs do. Ballot questions, state and local, ask voters to act as the legislature of last resort on the issues the elected one could not settle.

Polls and vote centers run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday; mail ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received by 5 p.m. Nov. 7. However the returns break, the government seated by this election will manage Nevada through its next water negotiation, its next budget cycle and its next boom-or-bust turn. The voters in line — and the ballots in the mail — are the whole of the selection committee.
